I was always hesitant when it came to the inclusion of music in films. More often than not I feel that the element is either overused or used in a way that does not aid in driving the story forward. While working on Inside, I knew that it was a necessity and was thrilled that Alexander Doan was willing to compose. Alexander is not only committed to composing a score that is appealing to his ears, yet more importantly a score that works for the story in its given structure. Alexander enters the mindset of a film and/or its director and it shows in the final product. Alexander was professional, understanding, down to earth and easy to communicate with during the scoring process. He took the time to understand what I was trying to achieve for the picture, and then pushed the envelope further during the recording and mixing process. His passion and dedication to composing is evident and I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Amazingly accomplished for his age, Alexander Doan is constantly creating, moving from one project to the next, and often juggling many simultaneously. It is no surprise that he is in such demand among his peers given his tremendous talent and remarkable ability to effortlessly compose winning scores in any musical genre. He is at home working in any style as long as it is best suited for the film in question. Alexander’s complete understanding of the role music plays in story telling makes him a valuable collaborator for any filmmaker. His creative juices run at lightening speed, and he derives inspiration from the emotional core of the stories he writes for. While combining a friendly, easy-going demeanor with meticulous perfectionism may seem like a rare mix, Alexander manages to do just that, ensuring that every working experience is a positive, creative endeavor. He is always full of original ideas, but knows how to listen and work with a team. On a personal note, I have heard consistent positive feedback on the scores Alexander has composed for my own films. He is always the number one choice for anyone who has had the pleasure of working with him in the past.

As a young filmmaker I couldn’t ask for a better composer than Alexander Doan. I take a lot of pride in calling him my composer. Each time I work with him we seem to agree more and more in every aspect of the scoring process, and he then continues to go well above my wildest expectations. He’s not only masterful at composing music, but finds a unique insight into whatever film he works on. He has the uncanny ability to work without ego, and does whatever it takes to get inside the mindset of the picture. All that is needed is a vague outline of what I want, and the result is the expression of my film portrayed in music. His passion for writing is inspiring and the quality of his work is astounding.

I could not be more pleased with Alexander’s score for the Tale of Gabriel Grub. His haunting melodies and his use of the orchestra brought the movie to life. He exceeded my expectations and produced a lavish and moving musical score.

As a musician, working with Alexander is like working with a best friend. He hand picks each musician for their specific sound and or talent. During the session, he allows each of us to interpret the music in our own way. Don’t get me wrong, he knows exactly what he wants from everyone, but he also values our ideas. He’s also extremely professional. Arriving at the session, the music is printed, the mics are ready, we do a brief sound check, then we hit record!
